Environmental Geography
I chose environmental geography. I chose this because environmental geography interests me. Environmental geography is the interactions between humans and the natural world. Environmental geography is effects North America because its climate, vegetation, and landforms have a very wide range. The precipitation is different from west coast to east coast and north to south. All of the types of forests are different too.
The climate in North America is very mild, and we experience all of the seasons equally. Around the Great Lakes it is characterized by relatively a long growing season, and has gets 30-60 inches of rain a year. Also they have a deciduous broadleaf forest, that they use for a lot of commercial agriculture. North of the Great lakes they have coniferous evergreen or boreal forest, which is more dominant in the cooler regions (ex. Quebec). Near Hudson Bay they’re tundra’s, which has a very short growing season. Climates between west Texas and Alberta have many tornadoes, and the average precipitation is between 10-30 inches yearly. It straddles the transition zone between humid and arid portions of North America. The subhumid regions is blessed with fertile soils and was originally clothed in prairie vegetation. Western North American climates are influenced by the Pacific Ocean. An example is San Francisco has a dry summer, and the Mediterranean climate is present in southern California.
Climate, region, and location… All attribute to what effects North America. North America is a very diverse region. North America is one of a kind and one of the most diverse, other than China and Asia, etc…

STEP TWO: In your blog, fill in all the blanks with correct answers. Be sure to use bold font for your answers and delete the underlines.
“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work. I am a person of integrity and I do not cheat.” Agree to this statement by typing your name here: _Katlyn_Cyphers_
Globalization is the increasing _interconectedness_of people and places through converging processes of __economical_ , _political_ , and cultural_ change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “_trickle_ down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new _technology_ to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the _world bank_ . On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest _20_% of the world’s people consume _86_% of the world’s resources, resulting in _inequalities_ between “haves” and “have nots.”
Use the CIA Factbook to answer the following questions: In Afghanistan the life expectancy is ____________ , the infant mortality rate is ____________ deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is ____________, and the TFR is ____________ . In Australia the life expectancy is ____________ , the infant mortality rate is ____________ deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is ____________, and the TFR is ____________ .
We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered _developing_ nations; Japan and Canada are _developing_ nations.
The current world population is over _6.6_ billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the _Total Fertility Rate_ , which is abbreviated as _TFR_ . When this number is exactly _2.1_ , then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in _developing_ nations.
A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is _developing_. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is _decreasing_. _Young_ people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and _males_ are found on the left hand side.
When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as _imagrants_, and people who are leaving a country are known as _emigrants_. People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is _disease_, and an example of a pull force is _jobs_ . If a nation’s net migration rate is a _negative_ number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.

Globalization is the increasing _interconnectedness_of people and places through converging processes of _economical__ , _political_ , and _cultural_ change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “_trickle_ down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new _technology_ to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the _WTO_ . On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest _20_% of the world’s people consume _86_% of the world’s resources, resulting in _inequalities_ between “haves” and “have nots.”
Use the CIA Factbook to answer the following questions: In Afghanistan the life expectancy is _17.6_ , the infant mortality rate is _151.95_ deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is _28.1_, and the TFR is _6.53_ . In Australia the life expectancy is _37.3_ , the infant mortality rate is _4.75_ deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is _99_, and the TFR is _1.78_ .
We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered _developing_ nations; Japan and Canada are _developed_ nations.
The current world population is over _6,789,432,230_ billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the _total fertility rate_ , which is abbreviated as _TFR_ . When this number is exactly _2.1__ , then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in _African_ nations.
A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is _rapidly growing_. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is _Slowly growing_. _Young_ people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and _Male_ are found on the left hand side.
When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as _immigrants_, and people who are leaving a country are known as _migrants_. People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is _unemployment_, and an example of a pull force is _health services_ . If a nation’s net migration rate is a _high_ number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.
STEP THREE: In a short, well-written essay, answer ONE of the following questions:
1) Some people feel very strongly in their pro-globalization opinions, while some anti-globalization advocates have different beliefs. It’s likely that the truth lies somewhere in between. What do you think is the “middle ground” in this argument? Be sure to provide evidence for your opinion. Answered in previously
OR 2) Explain the academic discipline of Human Geography using the five themes. How is this discipline different from the study of physical geography? In your opinion, what is the benefit of studying Human Geography?
OR 3) The demographic transition graph describes the changes in birthrates and death rates that a country experiences over time. Describe the changes that the United States has gone through by using the demographic transition diagram.
STEP FOUR: First, go to the following website and read the news story you will find there: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/world/americas/24mexico.html
Then, in a short yet brilliant essay, summarize that story by relating it to our studies of immigration in class. Try to use terms from the text and from our class discussions.
STEP FIVE: When you have finished your test, publish your post.
STEP ONE: Copy and paste the following paragraphs into your blog, including the Honor Code.
STEP TWO: In your blog, fill in all the blanks with correct answers. Be sure to use bold font for your answers and delete the underlines.

• Goats, sheep's, pigs, cows, horses, donkey's, two types of camels water buffalo, llama, reindeer, yaks, mythos, Bali cows
• None of the domesticated animals are from new guinea, or Australia, sub-Sahara Africa, and America
• South America has one domesticated animal, llama
• Others came from Asia
• Cow, goats, sheep, horses middle east
• The fertile crescent is in Mesopotamia
• They would plaster the inside of their house, and had ventilation
• Specialized workers, they didn't have to worry what they were going to eat
• They weaved, built buildings, plaster homes, farm, etc…
• Food surpluses, they had more food than needed. Good!!
• Westerners came and people from new guinea used that to advance technologically
• Over exploiting the environment made the land dry out, Mesopotamia, middle east
• When you have similar latitude they had for the most part the same vegetation
• New guinea is not all primitive, some have started to modernized
I think that the New Guineans should modernize because it is more civilized. They should try to balance their diets. Learn how to live green but become intouch with the world. Start using green cleaning products, eat better, and live in real houses. HAVE JOBS!!!!

Today we watched Guns Germs and Steel!!!!! And we took notes.... :'( about random people and countries.
• First granary - a place where grain is collected and stored.
• Started growing their own grain, because of a drought and they found out they could grow their own!
• Nomads are people who wander around.
• First know village where people started becoming civilized (they started living in villages/towns) 9500 B.C.
• They favored wheat and barley and corn
• They were trying to find out which wheat's were profitable, they were domesticating plants
• They tried to stay near water, they lived in the basin between the tigris and euphrates river
• What ever was growing where you lived that's what you ate and that's it.
• People may eat giant spiders for a replacement for protein
• Geographic luck to where you live depends on what you eat
• Humans are starting to domesticate animals
• After the stubble the goats could eat left over grain
• Goats and the sheep were the first domesticated animals
• Animals are the most powerful than a machine before the machine was invented
• Number of domesticated animals is 14

Essay 1
Globalization is a big controversial issue. They're people who are pro-globalization, and those who are anti-globalization. The people who are peo-globalization think that every country should be globalized. They will help other countries by loaning them money, giving them a boost financialy. People for anti-globalization argue that they're just trying to rip the defenseless countries and that what they can get, like their natural resources. They think it will make rich countries richer, and poor countries poorer. But there must be a middle ground! Something that can make both opposing forces happy! I think that we can help the poorer countries with stuff like health care and jobs to help them get through and try to become modernized but without hurting them and their country. And as for the people who want to take advantage of those poor countries, they need to stick to their buissiness and what their country needs help with. Maybe one day we can all live peacefully and in harmony, that would be a good middle ground.

Migration Patterns
Human Migration: The Story of a Community
People are constantly moving in and out of countries. People are moving out of countries because of the living consitions, money, and globalization. And sometimes people migrate for the cultural aspect.

Total Fertility Rate
In Canada the fertility rate has increased from 1.59 in 2007 to 1.66 in recent years. It's the highest its been since 1992. 367,864 babies were born in 2007, the highest since 1995. Since 2006, the number increased by 13,247 or 3.7 percent. women the age of 30 - 34 gave birth to 115,415. or a little less than 367,864. Women thirty and over were 50% of all births. Although 1.66 is a good fertility rate it is under what it should be, 2.1.
Net Migration Rate
"Australia’s Population Growing Fast" In Australia the population is growing the fastest its ever been. The population is 21.8 million, and 300,000 are immagrants. The last time the population grew this much was in the 1950's and 60's. But with each million people adds 25 million tons of polution :'( . The growth rate has almost doubled in 5 years.

Population Pyramid
The population pyramid shows the population of a country. It will also show us Fertility, Morality, and Migration. The country that I’m demonstrating is Mali. There population is 13,443. There growth rate is 2.6. The fertility rate is 6.6. The crude birth rate is 46. Their births are 642. Their life expectancy at birth is 52. Their infant morality rate is 116. Under five morality rate is 184. The crude death rate is 15. Deaths are 201. The net migration rate is -6. The net number of migrants is -74. http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idb/informationGateway.php

Today we discussed the Demographic Transition. to summarize what it is; Preindustrial- birth and death were very high and population was very low. As we started to urbanize and industrialize, birth and death rate started to slowly go down and population went up slightly. As we were progressing, birth rates were continually getting lower and really close and parallel to the very low death rates. population was very high. When we became Industrialized the population was very high and starting to slope a little bit downward, death rates were extremely low and even (steady), the birth rates are extremely low (BAD) and sloping just below death rates (MORE DEATHS THAN BIRTHS~SCARY!).
I got a considerate button!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!

Learning-objectives: teach us components of the pyramid. -gather and analyze info.
• Graphically represent the age and gender distribution of a certain population
• Can be represented by region and by country
• Help human geographers determine what is happening to individual populations across the globe
• Age: younger at the bottom old at the top
• Males on the left and females on the right
• Percentage under the age of 15: global average is 30% , ( Europe ) low is 17%. (Africa) high of 42 percent; high number indicates great potential for future growth, % of population over age 65: identifies need for health care and other social services
• Life expectancy: average number of years a person is expected to live; affected by many factors
• What its good for
• Which country has an overall higher life expectancy
○ Nation B
• Which country has a larger percentage of young population
○ Nation A
• If both countries have the same total population, which will be larger twenty years from now? Why?
○ Nation B because their people life longer and won't die so easily.

Pros and cons of globalization
The World Bank makes loans to poor countries so they can have a stronger economy.
The International Monetary Fund makes short-term loans to countries that are having financial trouble.
The World Trade Organization works to reduce trade barriers between nations to improve economic globalization and tries to mediate between nations and trading blocks that are arguing over trading.
All three groups are for globalization (pro-globalizers).
